On Tues., July 6, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Federal Realty Investment Trust, and supporter of the CF foundation, Hovde Capital Advisors, LLC, visited the New York Stock Exchange in recognition of Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
Cystic fibrosis affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has led remarkable advancements in research and care for CF, and has additional therapies in development that could add decades of life for people with this disease.

Tired of bad news? We are, too. So we asked this year’s 40 Under 40 honorees to tell us something anything good. And they delivered, with tales of triumph over adversity, inspiration drawn from family and friends, good advice from mentors and lessons learned in this historic economic downturn. When executives from high-speed wireless Internet provider Clearwire Corp. scoped out a move into the Chicago market last fall, Gregory Kirsch saw a bigger opportunity.
Mr. Kirsch, who joined the real estate advisory firm Newmark Knight Frank as a principal early last year to start up a new retail practice, proposed that he and his team be hired to manage transactions for all of Clearwire’s new locations nationwide.
He argued that his experience representing retailers in big, fast rollouts — from Washington Mutual Inc. to Starbucks Corp. to FedEx Kinko’s — made him well-suited to represent Clearwire.
“We certainly had the track record,” says Mr. Kirsch, who counts Kirkland, Wash.-based Clearwire as one of his new group’s biggest wins.
Mr. Kirsch’s rÈsumÈ highlights include opening 182 Washington Mutual branches in 2Ω years here and 50 Starbucks outlets while with his former firm, Chicago’s Baum Realty Group LLC — a track record that may seem tarnished since WaMu collapsed and Starbucks has closed scads of locations.
But brokers are hired to do deals, not set strategy, notes Curt Newsome, a former regional planning manager at WaMu. He says Mr. Kirsch and his partner, William Selonick, now also at Newmark, ran a well-oiled process that helped WaMu hit its rollout goal.
“They were able to get just an unbelievable amount of work done,” says Mr. Newsome, who’s now at outdoor gear retailer Recreational Equipment Inc.
Mr. Kirsch also has accomplished much in his time with New York-based Newmark. He’s grown his team to 10 people, including tenant and landlord representatives.
The former lawyer and native of Manistee, Mich., is known for his offbeat humor. He’s been promoting best-moustache contests at Newmark booths during local trade shows, with a $200 cash prize.
“Greg is a talker,” says David Stone, president of local rival Stone Real Estate Corp. “He’s very funny. And he doesn’t mince words, which I find refreshing. He’s got no filter whatsoever.”

SOMETHING GOOD: While shopping center owners view the recent spell of low rents as bad news, Mr. Kirsch says it could lead to retail innovation by giving more mom-and-pop stores and franchises a better chance to compete. “There’s a new realism regarding expected rental rates on the landlord side,” Mr. Kirsch says. “Rents two to three years ago were inflated.”
